Riddle Family

I found this picture in my grandfather’s Smith and Fox family files. He identified it as a picture of “The Riddles.” I have not started research on my Riddle family so I’m not sure who they could be. The following is what I have so far. If anyone can identify the people in this photo please email me directly or leave a comment below.

My great great grandmother was Willie Harret Riddle, born Sept 7, 1900 in Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR. She married Claude Rual Smith, Sept 3, 1916 in Ursula, Sebastian Co., AR. Willie is probably the third person from the left in the picture.

Willie Harriet Riddle Smith was the daughter of Greenlee Riddle and Emma Lucinda Griffin. Greenlee Riddle was born about 1873 in SC. His wife, Emma Lucinda Griffin was born June 9, 1877 in Johnson Co., AR. They were enumerated in the 1900, 1910 Johnson Co., AR census reports and 1920 Sebastian Co., AR Big Creek township. Willie’s mama Emma Lucinda Griffin, died when Willie was 3 yeas old and her father remarried to Fannie Lamb.

Willie had at least 3 siblings and 4 half siblings:
Estelle Riddle, b. abt Nov 1895, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR
Monroe Earl Riddle, b. abt Jan 1896, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR
Beaufort Clinton Riddle, b. abt 1898, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR
Willie Harriet Riddle, b. 7 Sep 1900, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR

Gladys Riddle, b. abt 1904, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)
Roland Riddle, b. abt 1907, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)
Rye or Ray Riddle, b. abt 1907, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)
Howell L. Riddle, b. abt Jan 1910, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)

Update 6/8/2007:
I found a message posted to the Riddle family ancestry message board from a Joe H. Riddle who was the son of the Howell Riddle listed above as son of Greenlee Riddle. Sadly, Joe Howell Riddle passed away in 2005, however his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are still residing in the Fort Smith / Van Buren Area. Joe Howell Riddle went to Fort Smith High school with my grandfather, Darrel Smith; I therefore believe that the people in this picture were children of Greenlee Riddle who lived in the Fort Smith area. I am trying to make contact with some of Joe Riddle’s children in Fort Smith to get more information.
If anyone has any information on this family, please email me or leave a comment.

Update 7/23/09: Joe Howell Riddle’s wife Julia Riddle provided information about this photo to me. Sadly, she passed away this year. Claude Smith (far left), Willie (Riddle)Smith (2nd lady from left), Roland Riddle (behind Willie Riddle Smith), Rosena Riddle (Howell’s wife) in striped dress, Howell Riddle (behind wife);

    I have been trying some 15 year old genuforum links which have not proved viable. I am hoping you are still up & running on genealogy. I connect to the Riddle group via Griffin/Moore & Smiths. Hope we can connect.
