This week I was contacted by a Cheek family descendant that is tied into my Riddle family of Laurens Co., SC. She contacted me through my family tree that is posted on She must have a premium account with them because I don’t think you can contact other non-family members without paying for that service. Our connection is Willis Cheek who was the father of Levi Cheek who married William Riddle in Laurens Co., SC. She is descended from Levi’s half brother Willis Abram Cheek. She has an online tree posted to I downloaded information from her tree, including a photo of Willis Abram Cheek, into my Family Tree Maker software. She commented that the Cheeks had dark curly hair. They also have dark eyes and soft facial features. I told her that my Greenlee looked similarly as a young man.

RIDDLE family researchers List

I searched for “Riddle” in the Laurens Co., SC mailing list archives and contaced the following researchers:

Robin Franks – great great grandchild of Martha Carolina Riddle (Mattie), who was born June 22, 1854 and died 6 Feb 1915. Martha Riddle married Mills Todd. Robin posted a query in 1998 about the ancestry of Martha Riddle. Donald Tucker posted the ancestry of Martha Caroline Riddle (Landrum, William, John) here. Robin, in turn, posted his descendancy chart here. However, I had a hard time reading the information because the generations are not numbered. I emailed Robin for clarification on the people he mentioned.

Donald J. Tucker – not sure how he is descended from the Riddle family, however he has posted that he has a lot of information on the Riddle family of Laurens Co., SC. He also posted that researchers have been searching for the parents of John Riddle for 15 plus years and still there is no more information. He also posted ancestry information for Martha Caroline Riddle (Landrum, William, John) here.

Don sent me a genealogy report for John Riddle of Laurens Co., SC. John Riddle was the oldest Riddle in the county, so most Laurens Co., SC Riddles have been linked to him. To Do: Review and input data from Don’s report re: John and Mary Higgins Riddle.

Bruce Smith – Bruce did not post specific messages about the Riddle family, however, in his list of surnames, he has the Riddle name listed. I emailed himon 6/4 to see what his Riddle connection was. I emailed him again on 6/15 with my Riddle connection and my Smith family information as well. He was looking for Smith connection in South Carolina. I believe now that my Smiths are from TN.

RIDDLE family, Laurens Co., SC

Yesterday I stayed home from work while recovering from a cold / flu that was passed around my family during our family vacation last week in GA. While I was on vacation, I scanned a bunch of my grandfather’s old family photos. I found the photo of the Riddle family and posted that online for folks to look at. Although I didn’t get much response (The Riddle family mailing list is not currently active), I did spend the day looking through census reports for the Riddle family in Laurens Co., SC. I noticed that we did not have very much information on the Riddle family and I wanted to fill in the gaps.

The oldest Riddle family member that I located in Laurens Co., SC was John Riddle. He was enumerated on the 1800 Laurens Co., SC census report and supposedly married to a Mary Higgins. There were two other Riddle men, William Riddle, who married Levy Cheek; and James Riddle who married Lydia; These two men are thought to be sons of John and Mary Riddle, however they are not in John’s will, presumably because they were older and probably had already received their share of John’s personal property.

William and Levy Cheek Riddle had a son, William Marion Riddle, b. 23 Feb 1836 in Laurens Co., SC. William Marion Riddle married Pernecy Moore and they had a son named Greenlee Riddle, born in 1873 in Laurens Co., SC. I found census reports for Greenlee from 1900-1920 and I lost him in 1930.

I’ve made contact with two other Riddle researchers and have been able to share information on my Riddle family via emails this week. One researcher shared information on the family of William Marion Riddle (1836) with me. This researcher is a descendant of William Marion Riddle’s son, Marion Frank Riddle (younger brother to my Greenlee Riddle). I sent him my descendancy report on 6/5/07.

Here is a brief History of Laurens Co., SC:

South Carolina was first formed in 1682 as “proprietary colonies” of Berkeley, Colleton, and Craven.
In 1769, 6 or 7 “Districts” were formed including the 96th District on the North Western corner of the state.
In 1785, 34 “counties” were established within these districts
In 1800, The “districts” of Washington, 96th, Pickney, Camden, and Cheraws were abolished and the existing 34 counties renamed to “Districts” in their place.
In 1868, The “districts” were reassigned as “Counties

Riddle Family

I found this picture in my grandfather’s Smith and Fox family files. He identified it as a picture of “The Riddles.” I have not started research on my Riddle family so I’m not sure who they could be. The following is what I have so far. If anyone can identify the people in this photo please email me directly or leave a comment below.

My great great grandmother was Willie Harret Riddle, born Sept 7, 1900 in Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR. She married Claude Rual Smith, Sept 3, 1916 in Ursula, Sebastian Co., AR. Willie is probably the third person from the left in the picture.

Willie Harriet Riddle Smith was the daughter of Greenlee Riddle and Emma Lucinda Griffin. Greenlee Riddle was born about 1873 in SC. His wife, Emma Lucinda Griffin was born June 9, 1877 in Johnson Co., AR. They were enumerated in the 1900, 1910 Johnson Co., AR census reports and 1920 Sebastian Co., AR Big Creek township. Willie’s mama Emma Lucinda Griffin, died when Willie was 3 yeas old and her father remarried to Fannie Lamb.

Willie had at least 3 siblings and 4 half siblings:
Estelle Riddle, b. abt Nov 1895, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR
Monroe Earl Riddle, b. abt Jan 1896, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR
Beaufort Clinton Riddle, b. abt 1898, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR
Willie Harriet Riddle, b. 7 Sep 1900, Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co., AR

Gladys Riddle, b. abt 1904, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)
Roland Riddle, b. abt 1907, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)
Rye or Ray Riddle, b. abt 1907, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)
Howell L. Riddle, b. abt Jan 1910, Johnson Co., AR (probably Spadra)

Update 6/8/2007:
I found a message posted to the Riddle family ancestry message board from a Joe H. Riddle who was the son of the Howell Riddle listed above as son of Greenlee Riddle. Sadly, Joe Howell Riddle passed away in 2005, however his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are still residing in the Fort Smith / Van Buren Area. Joe Howell Riddle went to Fort Smith High school with my grandfather, Darrel Smith; I therefore believe that the people in this picture were children of Greenlee Riddle who lived in the Fort Smith area. I am trying to make contact with some of Joe Riddle’s children in Fort Smith to get more information.
If anyone has any information on this family, please email me or leave a comment.

Update 7/23/09: Joe Howell Riddle’s wife Julia Riddle provided information about this photo to me. Sadly, she passed away this year. Claude Smith (far left), Willie (Riddle)Smith (2nd lady from left), Roland Riddle (behind Willie Riddle Smith), Rosena Riddle (Howell’s wife) in striped dress, Howell Riddle (behind wife);
